We All Have a lil’ Irish in Us?
The Yorkshire Press reports that a man, Chris Gregory, woke from brain surgery and had mysteriously acquired a new accent, talking and singing like a drunk Irishman who’d just left the pub.
When his eyes fell on his then fianceé Mary at his bedside he beamed from ear to ear and giggled “It’s da broid…”
The new Mrs Gregory said: “I couldn’t believe it when I walked onto the ward and heard someone singing Danny Boy really loud. It sounded like a drunken Irishman, and all the racket seemed to coming from the direction of Chris’s bed.
Mr. Gregory, who is not Irish, has no Irish connections, and has never been to Ireland regained his normal speech about a half hour after waking. He says he doesn’t remember any of it.
According to specialists, the condition is known as Foreign Accent Syndrome and was first recorded in Norway in 1941 when a woman began speaking with a German accent after surviving a bomb raid.
